What is an IP address?
An IP address is a unique number assigned to every device connected to the internet. It's how servers know where to send web pages, emails and video streams. Your public IP identifies your internet connection — usually a home, office or mobile carrier — and is visible to every website you visit.
How accurate is the location?
Geolocation is derived from IP registration data and routing hops — accurate to city level in most developed countries, country level elsewhere. It is NOT GPS-precise; a VPN or mobile carrier can show you in a different city than where you physically are.
Does MegaV store my IP?
No. This checker runs entirely in your browser. The IP lookup is done against the public ipapi.co service. MegaV keeps no server-side log of who used the tool or what IP they saw.
Why does my IP address keep changing?
Most residential ISPs assign dynamic IPs — they can change when your router reboots or on a fixed interval. Mobile connections change every time you switch cell towers. Static IPs require a business-tier plan or a VPN with a dedicated IP.
What's the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 (e.g. 192.168.1.1) is the older 32-bit format — we've nearly run out of addresses. IPv6 (e.g. 2001:0db8::1) uses 128 bits and provides virtually unlimited addresses. A VPN that only tunnels IPv4 can leak your real IPv6 if the site supports it.
Can someone track me by IP alone?
Your IP reveals your rough location and ISP. It's not enough on its own to identify you by name, but combined with cookies, browser fingerprint and account logins it builds a very accurate profile. A VPN hides the IP at the network layer; combine it with private browsing and tracker blocking for full cover.
